
In a residential patio, rainwater does not disappear simply because the new finish looks immaculate. When most of the ground is sealed with concrete, tiles or stone fixed in mortar, water looks for joints, walls, door thresholds and gullies. If those details have not been planned properly, the result can be persistent puddles, splashing, water ingress and early deterioration. Permeable paving can reduce surface runoff, but it is not an automatic cure: its performance depends on the ground, falls, build-up beneath the finish and the planned destination for water.

The ground deserves the same attention. An infiltration test carried out by a competent professional can show whether the subsoil accepts water at a reasonable rate. Locate pipes, roots, foundations, retaining walls and service chambers as well. Excavating deeper without understanding what is present can damage utilities or affect the support to nearby elements.
On sloping sites, permeable paving must not become an underground water route towards the building. The patio may need terraces, collection channels, inspection chambers or a compliant route for excess water. The objective is to work with the natural movement of water, rather than conceal it beneath an attractive finish.

Durable installation begins with excavation to the right level and a clean base compacted in layers and accurately graded. There is no universal depth: it depends on paving type, expected load, soil stability and the amount of water the sub-base must temporarily hold. Falls should still direct water away from walls and doors, even when the paving allows infiltration. Without restraint, blocks move apart and gravel migrates; joints widen, the surface loses its evenness and water begins to concentrate in the wrong places.
Use compatible materials throughout. Washed aggregates in the grading specified for the system help maintain voids; soil, fine sand and construction waste do the opposite. If you intend to plant grass or groundcover in grids, check sunlight, irrigation availability and resistance to foot or vehicle traffic. A green grid that photographs well can fail quickly in a heavily used parking space.
It also matters that one coordinated team considers the base, drainage, laying and finishing details together rather than as separate tasks. Construction supervision is particularly valuable where levels, waterproofing and existing services must be coordinated on site.
Permeable paving is not maintenance-free. Leaves, soil from planters, building dust, moss and sediment build up in joints and reduce the route available to water. Sweep routinely with suitable bristles, remove weeds before deep roots develop, and clean gullies, gutters and inspection chambers. After heavy rain, check whether water infiltrates evenly or whether saturated patches begin to appear.
Avoid repeated indiscriminate pressure washing, as it can remove jointing material or push fines into the base. Where clogging is localised, the surface fill may need to be vacuumed or removed and replaced with clean aggregate. Cracks, depressions and loose units should be dealt with early: they can indicate a problem with the base, restraint or drainage arrangement.
Include the patio in a seasonal maintenance plan, just as you would gutters and downpipes. Preventive care reduces urgent repairs and helps the outdoor space remain safe, clean and functional for years.
