Set dimensions that work in everyday use

Safety does not come from guardrail height alone. It comes from the relationship between steps, width, landings and hand support. A handrail set too far away from the walking line, hidden by growing planting or blocked by a gate loses its purpose. Likewise, a guardrail ending before the final step leaves the user unprotected precisely at the point of level transition.

Avoid copying dimensions from photographs or a neighbouring property. Measure on site after accounting for final finishes: stone, tiles, screed, waterproofing layers and thresholds all alter levels. Also check that the handrail does not interfere with a door opening, trolley access or cleaning. Choose fixings for the real substrate and for water exposure

It is common to order a guardrail before establishing whether it will be fixed to a concrete slab, a structural wall, a clad parapet or waterproofing over a roof. That sequence increases the likelihood of cracks, leaks and anchors with inadequate capacity. The fixing strategy should respond to the existing substrate, anticipated loads, element height and waterproofing system—not simply to visual preference.

Top-fixed parapet systems need particular care: they can allow water into the coping detail and reduce usable width. Side-fixed systems keep the floor clear, but require a wall or structural edge capable of receiving them. Anchors, threaded rods, base plates, welds and seals should be specified by someone familiar with the system and checked during installation.

The aim is not to fill an entrance with features. It is to create a legible sequence: stable paving, support that is easy to find, protected edges and materials that age well. A restrained but technically coherent solution usually lasts longer than a visually striking element that has been poorly integrated.

Check permissions, control installation and maintain the result

Changing an external guardrail can affect a façade, common parts, the character of a protected building or conditions established in an urban-planning process. During the work, request drawings showing final heights, fixing positions, finish, tolerances and treatment at wall and floor interfaces. Carry out an inspection before handover: is the handrail firm, continuous and comfortable? Does the guardrail move? Are base points sealed?
