
A well-designed wardrobe does more than store clothes: it helps you start and finish the day with less clutter, less effort and better choices. Yet it is common to invest in doors, hardware and internal divisions while leaving interior lighting until the end. The outcome is predictable: dark shelves, colours that are hard to distinguish and an improvised solution once the renovation is already complete.

This is not about turning joinery into an over-decorated feature; it is about creating useful, comfortable light that is easy to maintain. The right question is not “where can an LED strip fit?”, but “what do I need to see, and when?”. A shared wardrobe used early in the morning needs even light over rails, drawers and shelves. In a guest bedroom, a simpler arrangement may be enough. In an entrance cupboard, the priority may be finding coats, shoes and keys without lighting the whole corridor.
Make a brief survey before drawing the unit: module depth, hinged or sliding doors, high storage zones, internal drawers, mirrors and dark clothing. Light needs to reach the front of objects, rather than remain hidden behind them. In deep modules, one light source at the back creates shadows; in wide modules, distribution through two side lights or front-facing profiles often works better.

If the wardrobe reaches the ceiling, reserve an orderly cable route and an accessible place for the power supply. A door-opening sensor is generally the most intuitive option: the light comes on when the wardrobe opens and switches off when it closes. Most importantly, the installation should be tested after the doors have been aligned, because even a small misalignment can stop the circuit from switching off.
Presence sensors are useful in open dressing areas or modules without doors, but their detection angle and switch-off time need care. If they are too sensitive, they can activate when someone merely walks through the bedroom; if the timer is too short, they may switch off while someone is choosing clothes. In many homes, the most balanced approach is a door sensor for closed units and a discreet manual control for an open dressing space.

For a residential wardrobe, the safest choice is usually between 2700 K and 3000 K, especially in bedrooms with warm ambient lighting. If the bedroom has a more contemporary scheme and neutral general lighting, 3000 K to 4000 K may be appropriate, provided the same approach is maintained across all modules.
Colour temperature is not the only consideration. Colour rendering affects how well you can distinguish fabrics, make-up, accessories and clothing colours. Rather than selecting purely by price or advertised lumens, ask for a technical data sheet and check consistency between profiles. Mixing strips from different batches or with different tones is one of the most obvious reasons a wardrobe can look poorly finished.
The diffuser matters too. An exposed point source can create reflections in mirrors and discomfort when looking upwards. A continuous, diffused line concealed near the front of a shelf gives a softer result. The electrical installation must comply with applicable rules; Portugal’s underlying regulatory reference is the Technical Rules for Low-Voltage Electrical Installations, approved by Ordinance no. 949-A/2006.
The most important decision is often hidden: where will the LED driver be placed? Do not seal it inside an unventilated box or behind a fixed back panel that cannot be removed. Ideally, it should be accessible, protected from contact with clothing and recorded in the renovation file. Where there are several modules, decide from the outset whether they will use one shared driver or separate units.
The electrician should size circuits, protection and connections for the chosen system. It is not sensible to turn an existing socket into a chain of adapters inside the wardrobe, or to leave improvised connections behind panels. The low voltage at the LED profile does not remove the need for a properly executed upstream electrical installation.
Ask for the driver location, profile reference, installed power, sensor type and wiring route to be recorded. This makes it far easier to replace a component years later without dismantling the furniture. Also avoid untested sensors, inaccessible drivers, profiles without diffusers, cables with no maintenance allowance and lighting positioned where clothing will block it. Before final handover, test every door, drawer and sensor, both in daylight and at night. Confirm that the light is not directly visible from the bed, does not interfere with mirrors and always switches off reliably.
