Common roof tile types in Portugal
Roof tiles help protect a building from rain, wind and temperature changes while contributing strongly to its character. The right choice depends on roof pitch, exposure, supporting structure, drainage details and local architectural context.
Ceramic clay tiles
Clay tiles are widely used on Portuguese pitched roofs. They are available in several profiles and colours and can perform well when correctly supported, overlapped and ventilated.
Traditional curved tiles
Curved tiles are closely associated with historic and vernacular buildings. On rehabilitation projects, existing sound tiles may sometimes be retained or reused, while damaged units are replaced with compatible pieces.
Interlocking ceramic tiles
Interlocking profiles create regular courses and controlled overlaps. Their dimensions and fixing method must suit the battens, roof pitch and exposure of the building.
Concrete tiles
Concrete tiles offer consistent profiles and a range of finishes. Their weight, weathering and compatibility with the existing structure should be reviewed before they replace another roofing type.
Metal tile-effect systems
Profiled metal systems can provide a lighter roof covering and are sometimes used where weight or installation speed is important. Acoustic behaviour, condensation control, corrosion protection and detailing require careful attention.
What should be checked before replacement

- Underlay, ventilation and insulation strategy.
- Wind exposure and fixing pattern.
- Flashings around chimneys, walls and roof windows.

Tiles are only one part of the roof
Leaks often occur at joints, penetrations and drainage details rather than through the tile itself. Replacing visible tiles without inspecting the underlay, battens and flashings may leave the cause unresolved.
A roofing professional should assess the existing construction and specify a compatible system. Correct detailing and maintenance matter as much as the selected tile.
