Shower mixer in a Lisbon apartment bathroom, set up for safe domestic hot-water control.

If shower water is too hot, changes suddenly or leaves you using almost only the cold tap, do not begin by replacing the water heater or cylinder: first check the settings, flow stability and condition of the controls. This affects everyday comfort and domestic safety, especially where children, older people or people with reduced mobility live. Portugal’s Directorate-General of Health recommends adjusting water-heater and storage-cylinder temperatures to help prevent scalding.

What suggests a simple adjustment, and what suggests a fault?

There is a useful distinction between water that is consistently too hot and water that is unstable. In the first case, the appliance may be set too high or the mixer may allow too little cold-water blending. In the second, the cause may involve flow, an imbalance between hot and cold pressure, blocked filters, a faulty valve or the appliance itself.

Observe the issue for a few days:

  • Is the water too hot at every outlet or only in the shower?
  • Does the change happen when another tap opens, a toilet is flushed or a washing machine starts?
  • Did it begin after replacing the shower rail, tap or hot-water appliance?
  • Are there noises, drips, a gas smell, display errors or electrical trips?

If only the shower behaves oddly, start with the mixer, shower head and filters. If the issue occurs throughout the home, the hot-water appliance and pipework should be included in the check. A dripping safety valve, for example, must not be disabled or capped: the hot-water system needs to be assessed as a whole.

Why turning down the appliance does not always solve it

Turning the appliance control down may reduce discomfort, but it will not correct an unbalanced installation. A shower with weak cold-water pressure or a worn mixer can still deliver excessively hot water after a minor appliance adjustment. In older Lisbon buildings, partial pipework alterations and fittings installed at different times make this situation fairly common.

Start with the least invasive route:

  1. Remove and clean the shower-head screen if limescale or debris is visible.
  2. Check that the local isolation valves are fully open.
  3. Compare hot and cold flow at a nearby tap.
  4. Test the mixer in a middle position, without changing other water demands at the same time.

If the water changes from warm to very hot when someone opens a cold tap, do not compensate by partly closing the hot-water isolation valve. It is better to have pressure, filters and the mixer checked. This sequence can prevent replacing an appliance that was actually working correctly.

When planning a renovation, decide the position of taps, isolation valves and access points before closing walls; see our guide to a suspended ceiling in renovation.

What temperature should reach the shower?

The aim at the shower is water that feels comfortable and remains easy to control, without relying on tiny movements of the handle. Portugal’s DGS advises bathing in warm water and identifies adjustment of water heaters and storage cylinders as a way to prevent scalding. For domestic hot-water preparation, technical documentation for Portugal’s building energy-certification system defines hot water as potable water heated above 45°C; where water is stored, the control strategy must also take Legionella prevention into account.

That means the storage temperature and the temperature reaching the body are not the same decision. It is unwise to lower a cylinder setting indiscriminately to solve an uncomfortable shower, or to raise the setting to compensate for a poorly adjusted mixer. ADENE notes that domestic hot-water regulation must retain the measures needed to prevent Legionella.

Where children, older adults or people with reduced sensation in their hands live, a thermostatic mixer or temperature limiter can make use more predictable. The right choice depends on the existing system, available pressure and tap compatibility; it is not a universal accessory that replaces diagnosis.

Read ADENE’s guidance on domestic hot-water adjustment and Legionella prevention before changing cylinder settings.

Storage cylinder, gas water heater and heat pump: different checks

With a storage cylinder, look for water near the safety valve, outside corrosion, damp connections or leakage at the base. An occasional discharge may be part of normal operation, but a persistent change needs assessment. Do not seal the discharge pipe or replace safety components with improvised caps.

If the cylinder is in a laundry area, plan visible discharge and flooring that can direct a leak without concealing it inside cabinets; see how to decide on a floor drain in a home laundry area.

With a gas water heater, any smell of gas, irregular flame, soot, repeated ignition failures or changes to the flue require shutdown and attention from a qualified professional. Shower temperature must not be adjusted by changing internal appliance parts. Keep the ventilation intended for the room in place.

With a domestic-hot-water heat pump, check the operating mode, schedules, programmed temperature and whether hygiene cycles have been configured by the installer. Maintenance access, condensate drainage and safety-valve discharge must remain clear after adding cabinetry or enclosing a laundry area.

An efficiency measure must retain safety. The ADENE domestic hot-water action plan includes lowering shower temperature and adjusting the system to seasonal conditions, without turning energy saving into a blind alteration of the appliance.

Common mistakes that increase the risk

The most common mistake is to compensate for overly hot water by almost fully closing the hot or cold supply at a hidden isolation valve. This can conceal the cause, worsen stability and leave the next user unaware of what has changed. Another is replacing only the shower rail with a more attractive model while the mixer cartridge, pressure balance or appliance remains unchecked.

Also avoid:

  • removing the cover of a gas appliance or altering calibration screws;
  • disabling a cylinder safety valve because it drips;
  • using extension leads to power a storage cylinder temporarily;
  • leaving a small leak inside a cabinet until the next renovation;
  • testing very hot water with your hand when scalding is suspected.

If a burn occurs, the DGS advises cooling the affected area immediately with cool running water for several minutes and seeking clinical help for serious or extensive burns, or where children and older adults are affected. Do not apply butter, oils or home remedies. Read the DGS first-aid guidance for burns.

When to call a technician and what to prepare

Call a technician when temperature changes are marked, there is a gas smell, water is leaking, a safety valve discharges continuously, the appliance trips, an error code appears or hot water stops reaching several outlets. In an apartment building, notify the condominium manager too if you suspect a fault in a riser or shared element, rather than opening walls before the source is established.

To make the visit useful, note the appliance model and approximate age, photograph the technical label without dismantling anything, describe which outlets are affected and say whether the problem coincides with other water use. Ask for an explanation of the likely cause, proposed parts, required access and what should remain accessible for future maintenance.

During a bathroom renovation, include identifiable isolation valves, access to concealed components and a shower solution that allows precise temperature control. Domestic accident prevention belongs in the project from the first decisions; the DGS specifically recommends adjusting domestic hot-water systems to prevent scalding.

Key takeaways

  • If only one shower is affected, investigate the mixer, filters and shower head first.
  • Never block or remove the discharge from a storage-cylinder safety valve.
  • Comfortable shower temperature and storage temperature are separate decisions.
  • Gas smells, persistent leaks, errors or sharp temperature swings need technical diagnosis.

If you are renovating a bathroom or replacing a hot-water system, ask Obra Lisboa to include isolation valves, maintenance access and a safe shower-control solution within the scope of the works.
