An under-sink water filter can clear the worktop of jugs, reduce bottled-water purchases and make everyday use of the kitchen tap easier. It is not, however, a simple matter of picking a brand. In many Lisbon flats, the sink cabinet is already crowded with traps, shut-off valves, dishwasher hoses and cleaning products. A poorly planned filter can make routine maintenance awkward or allow a small leak to go unnoticed.
Start by deciding what you actually want the system to do: improve taste, reduce particles, install reverse osmosis, or create a separate drinking-water point. Water intended for human consumption is subject to oversight and a specific framework, outlined by the Portuguese Directorate-General of Health guidance on drinking water. A domestic filter does not replace repairs to ageing pipework or the response required after a notice from the water supplier.
“I want filtered water” can mean several different things. An activated-carbon cartridge is often selected to improve sensory qualities such as taste or odour. A reverse-osmosis system needs more room, may need power and usually requires a drain connection for reject water. There are also ultrafiltration and particle-filter options. Do not select the broadest claim on the box: ask for the technical data sheet, check what the unit is designed to treat, and match that to the household’s actual need.
If the concern began with cloudy water, a lasting change in colour, an unusual smell or suspected pipework trouble, investigate the cause first. The DGS information on water for human consumption helps distinguish public-supply quality from faults that may arise within private plumbing. Filtering without diagnosis can simply conceal a defect that remains inside the wall.
Open the cabinet and measure usable width, depth and height, but do not stop there. Note the position of the trap, angle valves, dishwasher safety valve, hinges and internal drawers. A tall filter housing may fit on a product page but not below the bowl; a storage tank may block the shut-off valve; a fold-down door may hit an extra tap fitting.
Keep a clear zone for unscrewing housings, replacing cartridges and checking connections. Avoid pushing the system against the back panel if that means removing the trap whenever servicing is due. If the kitchen is being redesigned, coordinate the filter with practical kitchen planning: moving the recycling bins or relocating cleaning products to an adjacent drawer can create a far more useful technical cabinet.
There are three common arrangements: a dedicated filtered-water tap, a three-way mixer tap, or a system connected to the existing tap. A separate tap clearly separates the two supplies and can make everyday use easier to understand. A three-way mixer may avoid another hole in the worktop, provided the worktop and tap model allow it. With natural stone, porcelain or compact worktops, confirm drilling requirements before fitting so the finish is not damaged.
The branch connection should sit after an accessible shut-off valve, using compatible components. Do not accept stretched hoses, tight bends or joints hidden behind drawers. A small robust tray beneath the unit will not remove the risk of a leak, but it can make a slow drip visible sooner. If a dishwasher is also being fitted, review the connections together using the guide to installing a dishwasher in an existing kitchen; multiple improvised adaptations around one valve make future maintenance harder.

Reverse-osmosis units generally need a drain connection for reject water and, depending on the model, may require minimum pressure, a tank or a pump. This changes the cabinet design. It is not enough to find an unused pipe: the drainage connection must be made correctly, without restricting flow or creating a fragile assembly. The trap must remain functional and any joints likely to need inspection should stay reachable.
Before proceeding, check the manual for operating pressure, expected flow, electrical requirements and the manufacturer’s stated reject-water ratio. Water efficiency belongs in the decision from the start. ADENE’s AQUA+ water-performance scheme assesses water performance in buildings, while ADENE’s residential guidance highlights the value of efficient devices and equipment. A filter should not turn a wish to reduce bottle waste into an unseen increase in water waste.
The real cost does not end with installation. Include cartridges, membranes, sanitising, any batteries, dedicated taps and servicing when comparing systems. Record consumable references and the manufacturer’s replacement schedule; keep the manual in the technical cabinet or in the home’s digital records. Leaving a cartridge in service beyond its intended life, or restarting an unused system without following its instructions, is not a saving.
Hygiene also depends on use and installation. Do not leave the cabinet damp, overcrowded with cloths or with cleaning chemicals touching the equipment. The DGS provides material on Legionella prevention and control in water systems. A domestic filter is not automatically a Legionella issue, but the practical principle remains relevant: water installations need cleaning, proper operation and no avoidable stagnation. If walls or fixed cabinetry are being closed, provide access to valves and connections.
A filter can be a sensible choice for convenience and drinking preference. It is not automatically a remedy for every health concern, and it does not replace public instructions if there is an incident affecting the supply. Portuguese law treats water for human consumption within a regulated context; consult the Diário da República water-resources framework and always check the supplier’s specific communications if a local problem occurs.
During a renovation, the sensible sequence is straightforward: first assess pipework and valves; then choose the system; next design the cabinet space, tap and drainage; finally, plan maintenance. If the budget is tight, start by fixing leaks, improving access to shut-off valves and reducing excessive flow. Efficiency is not created by the filter alone: the guide on reducing kitchen water use during a renovation covers complementary decisions that matter every day.
